Why Friends of Calcite?

Calcite is the second most abundant mineral in our planet and one of the most important for the life cycle. Calcite from the ocean is used by bivalves and mollusks to build their shells. The human body uses Calcite for building bones and teeth. Micro-organisms produce biogenic Calcite for various purposes. Calcite rich soils are beneficial to plants and trees and for biomineralization of plant roots. Calcite is known by archeologists to help preserve fossils and its potential bio mineralization is important for space exploration of life. On Earth Calcite is used for multiple industrial purposes, including the production of Portland cement and cosmetics. Thus, scientists of multiple disciplines are strongly interested in Calcite behavior. The goal of Friends of Calcite is to connect all these various scientists and facilitate their interaction and collaboration.

The group is managed by Dr. Roberto Suarez-Rivera

About Friends of Calcite

Friends of Calcite is an independent group dedicated to connecting researchers of different scientific background and expertise, working on Calcite, to meet, collaborate with one another, and collectively improve our understanding of this important mineral.

We meet online every month, to discuss a guest speaker’s work, searching for new approaches, ideas, and solutions to our particular research challenges. Speakers are encouraged to present and discuss their challenges and failures, giving the participants a better opportunity to contribute and learn. Participants, with their diverse knowledge and experience, are encouraged to serve as a brainstorming board.

Our goal is to attract medical doctors, biologists, geochemists, surface chemists, geologists, archeologists, petrographers, construction engineers, material scientists, space scientists and others who are interested in calcite behavior, to interact with one another.

We meet online, on the second or third Friday of the month, at 8:30 am US Central time.
